How to Lose Weight the Healthy Way

Health & Medical Blog

Losing weight the healthy way isn't easy. It takes hard work, will power, and determination. There are a number of weight-loss fads and diets out there, but the problem with most of them is you will most likely gain back the weight you lose after you finish. You don't need a diet to lose weight; you need a lifestyle change. See below for some lifestyle changes to help you lose weight and be healthier.

Drink Water

Drinking water will not only help you feel fuller during the day, but there are also a number of other health benefits to it. Water aids in digestion and also works as a natural toxin cleanser. Drink at least 8 glasses of water per day every day to get these benefits. If you don't like the flavor of plain water, add a handful of fresh berries or cucumber to give it some flavor.

Increase Your Fiber Intake

Increasing your fiber intake will also help you feel fuller and help with digestion. Try to eat between 30 to 50 grams daily. High fiber foods such as apples, beans and lentils, green veggies such as broccoli and peas, and almonds all are high in fiber. You can also increase your fiber by eating chia or flax seeds. Sneak a teaspoon into a healthy green smoothie; you won't even taste them. You can find these seeds at your local grocery store.

Eat Healthy Portions

Eat the proper portion sizes. This may mean you need to start measuring your food and invest in a cheap food scale to help you. Skip going back for seconds and try to stop eating when you are just beginning to feel full. Waiting until you are so full you can't move means you are overeating. This is one of the hardest parts of changing how you eat. The best part of not going back for seconds, though, is that you'll always have left-overs, which will means you'll start saving money on your grocery bill.

Eat When You're Hungry, Not When You're Bored

Listen to your body and only eat when you're hungry. If you are constantly going back to the kitchen for something small to eat, you're most likely just bored. Pick up a book, work out, or go for a walk instead. Try to keep yourself busy and stay out of the kitchen. If you are truly hungry, eat something that will help you feel full. Try apple slices with some peanut butter and granola. It's delicious and filling while also healthy, as it's a high-fiber snack.

Exercise

Exercise can be anything from a brisk walk around the block to aerobics, yoga, or lifting weights. The type of exercise you do should be tailored to your weight-loss goals and what your body will allow you to do. Start off with just walking and then work your way up to running. Don't try to push your body too quickly, as you can cause injury. Always be sure to talk to your physician before beginning any type of exercise routine.
