Allergies are more common than many people think. They might assume that because they haven't had an allergic reaction in the past, they will never develop an allergy. Similarly, many parents believe that if they themselves don't have allergies that their children are immune. Both of these assumptions are false. It is not uncommon for people develop allergies, and for children to have allergies even if the parents don't. This is why you should know what you are looking for in yourself and your child to protect them for serious complications of allergies. Here are some things you should know.
1. Rashes
One of the most common signs that there is a problem is a rash. This is even most closely associated with food. If you are exposed to something that your body rejects it is likely to cause a rash, especially of the allergy is currently mild. For instance, some of the most common places for rashes are on the face, or around the buttocks and genitals. For babies and children it may look like a diaper rash, for teenagers and adults the rash on the face can appear to be like acne. In some cases the rash will appear immediately, within moments of eating the food. This is especially the case if the person has a reaction to dairy. For others, it expresses itself more like eczema. The person will get terrible eczema that may show up hours or a day or two after exposure, then go away when they stop eating the food.
2. Anxiety
Another thing that people fail to see a relationship with is anxiety and allergies. When you eat something or are exposed to something that you are allergic to, your immune system goes into hyper-drive. In some cases this will ignite the flight or fight response as well. The heart will beat faster, and the person may feel a sense of doom. This can make the person worry that something is bad is going to happen, an adult may feel like they are going to have a panic attack, but a child may not be able to express themselves that well. So the child may act agitated, angry, cry a lot, or appear to be unmanageable. In many cases simply eliminating the food or allergen they are reactive to can help to resolve the behavioral problems.
